How to Optimize Your Resume for ATS
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are used by most companies to screen resumes. Here's how to ensure your resume gets through these automated systems.
1. Use Standard File Formats
Save your resume as a .doc or .pdf file. Avoid using .docx as some ATS systems may have trouble reading it.
2. Avoid Graphics and Images
ATS systems often struggle with reading text that's embedded in graphics or images. Keep your resume text-based and avoid using charts, logos, or other visual elements.
3. Use Clear Headers
Use standard section headers like "Work Experience", "Education", and "Skills". ATS systems look for these keywords to properly categorize information.
4. Include Industry Keywords
Use relevant industry-specific keywords throughout your resume. These should match the keywords used in the job description.
5. Keep Formatting Simple
Use simple bullet points and avoid complex layouts. ATS systems may not read information correctly if it's in columns or tables.
6. Use Standard Job Titles
Use common job titles that match industry standards. If you have a unique job title, include the standard equivalent in parentheses.
7. Include Dates
Include complete dates for all positions (month and year). ATS systems use dates to calculate experience.
8. Use Proper Spacing
Use consistent spacing and avoid using tabs. Use spaces instead for indentation.
9. Include Contact Information
Include your full name, phone number, email address, and city/state in the header.
10. Test Your Resume
Use online tools to test your resume's ATS compatibility before submitting it to ensure it will be properly read by these systems.
